EMOTIVE ELECTRONICA
Emotive Electronica
electronic music that confers a deep sense of emotion to the listener.
For many years, music was the only real way I was able to deeply understand and communicate emotion. As a child, I would sit in a darkened room for hours on end improvising at the piano while my family watched soap operas about the drudgery of day-to-day life.
I’d listen intently to the decaying sounds of frequencies and experiment with chords and their relationships to each other. Each chord created a feeling … and as I built up my own pieces I realised I could shape the narrative of emotion through music. Listening back to albums I’ve created (going back to Lunatic Calm days in the late ‘90s) I realise now that each track has been an articulation of some kind of emotion.
RE-DISCOVERING MY VOICE
When I began recording as Simon Shackleton in 2011with the track Ten10, it was a deliberate attempt to find some emotional range while also keeping one foot on the dancefloor. I’d spent the previous decade focusing on creating music as Elite Force in a style that had become increasingly heavy and was very much tailored to servicing clubs, and my own DJ sets. It was at Burning Man in 2011 that I really re-discovered that voice (and I can’t thank The Scumfrog enough for showing me the way during one specific moment on board the Robot Heart art car!).
In recent years I feel like electronic music has become a lot more openly expressive of emotion, and I wanted to curate a Spotify Playlist that reflects that.
This selection is being updated on a monthly basis. If you enjoy music that gives you all of the feels, please HEART the playlist and enjoy the ride.
